What is mesothelioma

What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma (mesothelium cancer) is a disease in which the cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or sequence. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Cancer cells can also spread (spread) from their place of origin to other parts of the body. Most cases of mesothelioma begin with the pleura or peritoneum.

Mesothelioma is a benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) tumor that affects the lining of the chest or abdomen. Exposure to asbestos particles in the air increases the risk of developing malignant mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that involves mesothelioma or the cells lining the organs, abdominal organs, usually the lungs, and heart. The most common form of mesothelioma is pleural mesothelioma, which forms a malignant tumor in the pleura, the sac that covers the chest cavity and protects the lungs. Other forms of mesothelioma affect the peritoneum (the intima of the abdominal cavity) and the pericardium (the lining around the heart).

What is mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is usually caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos mesothelioma is a fibrous mineral that is known to be carcinogenic. People who have been exposed to asbestos fibers for a short time (weeks) or even small amounts can be at risk. In particular, asbestos and their families, or people living with asbestos, develop mesothelioma. There is a long incubation period between the initial exposure to asbestos and the development of a malignant tumor. On average, 35-40 years pass before the onset of the disease.

Early symptoms of mesothelioma can resemble pneumonia, including shortness of breath, shortness of breath, persistent cough, chest and abdominal pain. Fluid often collects between the pleura and the pleura (called a pleural exudate), causing shortness of breath (shortness of breath) and sometimes pain. Some people have no symptoms.

Treatment for mesothelioma is surgery to remove the tumor, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or a combination of the three. The survival rate after symptoms appear is about 4 to 12 months, depending on the state of health and the time of diagnosis. However, in some cases, it may live longer.
